The Spring Festival Week(Xiaonian) is a traditional Chinese festival, also known as the “New Year Festival”, “Kitchen God Festival”, “the Festival of Cooking” and so on. The main folk activities in the off-year are sweeping dust, offering sacrifices and so on. China has a vast territory and local customs vary greatly.
Due to different local customs, the days called “Xiaonian” are also different. In most parts of south China, the 24th of the twelfth lunar month is the “Xiaonian”, while in most parts of north China, the 23rd of the twelfth lunar month is the “Xiaonian”.
The off-year is usually regarded as the beginning of the busy year, which means that people begin to prepare New Year’s goods, sweep the dust, worship the kitchen, etc., to have a clean and happy New Year, expressing people’s good wishes to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new. Offering sacrifices to the stove has a history of thousands of years among the Chinese people, reflecting their pursuit of the dream of having more than enough to eat and dress.
