The interior is square, completely different from our ordinary family car, almost all positions are hard plastic and plastic-lined package, solid and durable than comfortable and luxurious.
The steering wheel is plastic, and there are no multi-function buttons, not even the horn button, which is on the top of the turn signal lever, just like the Citroen Fukang.
The car doesn’t have any airbags! Because for a military vehicle, it needs to be driven in the field, even if there is no road ahead, but also to wade out a road, extreme bumpy conditions, airbags may be “accidentally fried”.
The horn button is designed at the top of the headlight lever, no matter what position the steering wheel is in, the horn is within reach, allowing the driver to focus more on driving. This design was also found on the original Citroen Fukang, but unfortunately it was wildly criticized as “anti-human”.
The instrument panel is very simple, with mechanical needle gauges. Apart from the two usual engine tachometer and speedometer, the top two ends are tire pressure gauges for all four wheels, and the three in the center are a water temperature gauge, a fuel gauge, and an oil temperature gauge.
The light control switches are the simplest and most reliable see-saw style mechanical buttons.
The car is mated to a five-speed manual transmission with a high-speed four-wheel-drive locking center differential lock; high-speed four-wheel-drive unlocking center differential lock; and shift levers for neutral and low-speed four-wheel-drive. The handbrake is also not a rear-wheel brake in the traditional sense, but a central driveshaft brake for greater reliability and efficiency.
The door limiters are nylon cloth straps, as on some hardcore off-roaders. This is also for easy removal and the doors can be opened at a wide angle.
There are only two seats in the back, with a platform in the center that can house various equipment and even weapons. The Mastodon is mostly used as a platform, for example, for command, reconnaissance, anti-terrorism, and assault, rather than a simple means of transportation.
Dongfeng Mastodon has gone through three generations of products, this Mastodon does not look big, in fact, is the first generation of the smallest one, the other models to be bigger and stronger performance. Some people say that the Dongfeng Mastodon is a copy of the U.S. Hummer, the reality is that the Mastodon in the early stages of research and development, indeed to the U.S. Hummer as a benchmark reference, but the Mastodon’s performance is much stronger than the Hummer.
